Pantene Proves A Simple Press Release Doesn't Have To Be Boring

Pantene Proves A Simple Press Release Doesn't Have To Be Boring

Something we always respect is a creative solution that doesn’t cost a fortune. This nice little piece by Grey reinforces the selling point of Pantene in a simple but elegant way, and although the envelope only houses a press release, it will have much more chance of being read. Nice work.

Oh, Pretty Places

Oh, Pretty Places

New work for a new client, courtesy of Cultivator. From the press release:
A breaking real estate advertising campaign, the first work by CULTIVATOR ADVERTISING & DESIGN, Denver, for its new client, Red Ledges, LLC, Heber City, Utah, makes the most of some spectacular landscape photography. It has to. The homes are not yet built.
The advertising idea is to juxtapose the scenics (in which viewers must imagine a home) with headlines that are grounded in the familiar. One ad reads, “The Beaten Path stops here.” Another: “Going back to a kinder, Gentler Era isn’t possible. So we’ll just have to create our own.” Additionally, small, decorative photos of indigenous plants bridge the gap on the page between images of existing land and text describing the as yet unbuilt homes.
The ads are nice, but we’re even more impressed with the photography, which has credits going to the – get this – client. Of course, the real magic wand is Armando Martinez, re-toucher Mando-matic, here in town. Nice work.
We’d be curious to see a before and after of the clients’ photography. We’ve all been in presentations when the issue of original photography arises and the client assures you, “Oh, we’ve got a guy we use,” which usually translates to “My brother-in-law took a photography class back in junior college. He has a camera. You will use him.” It ain’t cool.
Anyhoo, these are some purdy pictures. Good job to the crew at Cultivator.

Nude Liftrider Incident Recreated by Photographer David Mejias

Nude Liftrider Incident Recreated by Photographer David Mejias

Surely, you remember the New Year’s day incident with the super-douche who managed to slide through a Vail chairlift and yank down his drawers in process? Well, Boulder photographer David Mejias has recreated the scene as a self-promo, along with retoucher Joel Given from XYZ Graphics.
The final product consists of 6 images and 30+ hours of retouching, after the talent was rigged onto a 15-foot swing set. Why’d you blur the best part, David?

Ralph Lauren Continues The Skinny Chick Controversy

Ralph Lauren Continues The Skinny Chick Controversy

By now, you’ve likely heard about the sorry, retouched Ralph Lauren ad, featuring a super-skinny model, that’s been making the rounds, causing quite the stir with RL’s lawyers at Boing Boing and Photoshop Disasters – who originally unearthed the ad.

It seems the same over exuberant retoucher (or his cousin?) has been hard at work on lots of Ralph Lauren marketing materials. Photoshop Disasters has just discovered another mess, by way of a window display for Ralph Lauren out of Sydney. Ralph, Ralph.

The Hunter Douglas Luminette Sample Book from Cactus

The Hunter Douglas Luminette Sample Book from Cactus

Cactus, Denver was hired to design and produce the product sample book for one of Hunter Douglas' premiere brands, Luminette Privacy Sheers & Modern Draperies.
The sample book is the key component of the Luminette brand identity and is the main tool used in the market to showcase the product and sample the fabric offerings. Sales reps and dealers rely on the sample book to tell the Luminette story and benefits to prospective customers. Consumers, on the other hand, need the book to tell a story – visually and in simple, top-line messaging. They need to identify with the product and recognize that Luminette offers what they are looking for to complement their home – sophistication, quality and selection.
Cactus set out to ensure that the sample book lived up to Luminette's premier reputation – in its content, in its functionality and in its design. Cactus restructured the content in order to communicate product benefits more efficiently. They rethought the functionality to help sales reps and dealers present samples more effectively. And they redesigned the appearance to more quickly make the impression that Luminette is an elite product line.
From exquisite professional photography and top of the line materials to innovative fabric sampling devices and carefully crafted copy, every detail was designed to capture the elegance and upscale quality of the Luminette brand.
Since the design called for sampling devices that had never been created, Cactus needed to partner with a sample maker that was capable of developing new techniques and producing the specifics and intricacies of the book with the highest level of finish. Their search took them to all the way to Shenzhen, China.
The result?
The 2011 Luminette Privacy Sheers & Modern Draperies Sample Book won the award for Best Sampling Program at the 2011 Window Covering Manufacturers Association (WCMA) Product Awards.

What I Learned This Year 2012 #31: Jessyel Ty Gonzalez

I’m no writer, friends – my world instead revolves around that of photography. I had visions of grandeur when preparing to write this. It was going to be humorous, with nuggets of wisdom and parcels of prowess that were going to bring a smile to your brain. Instead, you get this unkempt mess:
I learned that...
-Life can provide statistically almost-impossible surprises. Example: I have a kid now!* (She’s pretty awesome.)
-On that note, it’s amazing what you can do on a few hours of sleep.
-You get odd stares when you take your one-month-old to the bar for that evening drink.
-That “Dear Sophie” Google Chrome commercial gets me every time.
-Surrounding yourself with smart, humble, and hard-working people will do wonders to your work and being. Doing the opposite is hazardous.
-You win some. You lose some.
-Seeing your image come to life in a darkroom is a truly magical thing.
-The more time I spend with them, the more I realize photographers are very odd individuals. Every single one of us. The only explanation I can come up with is that (for me, at least) photography provides the brightest of highs and darkest of lows. That emotional roller coaster has to affect you somehow...
-Less can be more.
-Even though I’m 27, I felt old for the first time in my life. How did those young interns not get any of my Fresh Prince and Seinfeld references?!
-Photography is in oversupply. Photographers who are creative problem solvers are going to win.
-72dpi is very forgiving.
-I’m much more inspired by people who make great photographs instead of those who only talk about them.
-Remember those toys hidden inside cereal boxes when you were a kid? I miss that. (Hint, hint, cereal makers.)
-I like to prep myself the night before a big shoot by watching a film with great cinematography. (There Will Be Blood, Drive, and The Assassination of Jesse James... provided me good fortune this year.)
-The Colorado photography scene is starting to get serious.
-I need to find a way to help people through my photography.
-I still have not taken a truly great photograph. This haunts me.
-Photography definitely has a hook on me. There was a stretch when I worked twenty hours a day for over two weeks on a stressful project. It was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity. I love what I do, even when I don’t know why I should.
-Long story short, turns out Hallmark doesn't make a 'Sorry My Zipper Was Accidentally Down During That Entire Photo Shoot' card.
-The key to great photography is not letting anyone see your bad shots.
-I really miss shooting with film (especially Kodachrome).
-All light we see is from the past. Think about that for a second. WE ARE SEEING THE PAST IN THE PRESENT, PEOPLE!
-The equipment does matter.
-Behind every great photographer is a great retoucher.
-A few of my photos were seen by millions of people this year (TV endcards). There’s something humbling and frightening about that.
-If a movie trailer has Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby" or Tone Loc's "Wild Thing," STAY AWAY FROM THAT MOVIE.
-When I was first starting out, one of my biggest dreams was to have my photos in TIME Magazine. This year, I accomplished that. Then (spoiler alert) the last scene from Finding Nemo hits my head: Now what? I’m scared that no matter how much I accomplish, it may never be enough.
-There’s only one way to find out, though. This year’s new goals: I want a magazine cover and billboard, dammit.
-A small amount of kindness goes a long way. (Seriously, folks – let’s be nice to one another.)
-I need to get better about shooting personal work.
-I just generally need to step it up.
-I still leave the damn lens cap on sometimes.
-I’m one lucky son of a bitch.
*: I don’t plan on ever telling my child she was an accident, but part of me hopes she finds out by reading this article fifteen years in the future. Also, I hope my wife doesn’t read this. If so... SURPRISE, HONEY! I love you...

Photo-Retouching - rious techniques used to enhance the quality of a photograph

  • Photo-Retouching
Various techniques used to enhance the quality of a photograph
  • For some, retouching a photo can be tedious, painstaking and detailed type of work. I actually enjoy and find it a peaceful challenge to take someone else's snapshot photo and transform it into a more pleasing photograph. There are many layered steps and the results can be quite subtle to the untrained eye. These changes may not be so obvious at first, but I will try to highlight what was done.

First, these were all done in Photoshop (CS5) and some techniques involved: cropping, color balancing, adjustments, layers/masks, paths, filters.
So you can see the difference, I've tried to show on the Left side: Original photo/Before, and on the Right side: After Retouching
I hope you will also agree the changes are for the better.  These photos were done as preparation for use in the client's website.  She owns a dog grooming business.  The goal was to be able to focus on the dogs and her grooming skills.
  • On the Left, we see the Pomeranian seems to disappear into the background.  Everything seems grey.  The Right shows cropping, and some masking with a blur in the background, contrast and exposure boost, in order to really focus in on the dog and distinguish it from the background.  I also removed the white flash in pupils.
  • Here we see the Left image has some distracting background, like foilage growing out of the sheepdog's head.  The Right version through layers, masking, filters (blur), clone stamp, has removed some of this.  We can now focus on the clean cut and shape of the Sheepdog's groom.
  • Cropping, masking with blur filter, adjustments for brightness and contrast to help make the white poodle stand out more from background.
  • In addition, I've also created "Before/After" photos to place on the client's website.  These also required some enhancements, including cropping, adjustments, color balancing.  Hope you agree these helps to show the groomer's talents.

Retouching more than 2,000 files in 24 hours!

Retouching more than 2,000 files in 24 hours!

If you read my blog post on the hectic launch of PeopleImages.com you will definitely find this video interesting. Just a few days before the scheduled launch date, I realized something terrible: I had promised the entire world a site with at least 70,000 images from my collection, but we only had around 68,000 files online. Imagine launching a site with a massive headline on the landing page saying “70,000 royalty free images” and the users then proceeding to the search page and find that they are currently viewing “1-50 of 68,325 images”. Not good at all!
We only had a one day, but it had to be done. So we created a 24 hour challenge at our studio in Cape Town!
I am still amazed by the fact that 24 retouchers took up the challenge and worked for 24h+ to help make the promise come true, and I am grateful to each and every one of them. It is amazing working with people who take so much pride in their job and who are willing to go that extra mile it sometimes takes to get to the finish line.
When we saw the sun in the horizon the next morning, we had the necessary 70,000 images, and although we were all completely exhausted, it was so great to see everyone with huge smiles on their faces. The team finished more than 2,000 images during those 24 hours, and some of the fastest retouchers on the team got through as many as 250 images without compromising the quality of their work. (Passed Quality Control!)
Thanks to all those who took part in this great, tiresome, awesome, funny and amazing challenge. You can now find some of those 2,000 images here on PeopleImages.com. :)

“The Artfully Mastered” Image

“The Artfully Mastered” Image

When was the last time you had a professional portrait taken? Chances are, it was just… OK.  This will be the image you display for all to see, it will be part of your brand. Do you want it to be just OK?  As a Board Certified Master Photographer, I believe that each image should reflect quality and perfection. It should showcase the individual at their best.
With the new technology available, it is no longer acceptable to deliver an image that has not been “Artfully Mastered”. Just what does that mean?  It used to be that a photographer captured an image and it was delivered with very little retouching. Now, that photographer has to be more than just a photographer he/she has to be a photographic artist. That means taking advantage of the technology that we have available and then use our skills and training to know how to make that image perfect.  With that being said, just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. After many years of being an instructor, I realized that many in the profession would over use and over do an image just because they thought it might be cool and artsy. Simple enhancements are all that is needed to perfect an image.  I guess it’s all in perception and everyone has their own opinion, but the customer has to be pleased with the image. We always make a point to ask what they would like and then advise on how that can be done.
In the example below, many would deliver the image on the left, which would you want? Simple enhancements to the hair, eyes and lips make the image on the right more desirable.
Many consider the eyes to be the “window to the soul”,  the eyes are certainly what makes a portrait come to life. People want to be engaged and a proper portrait can make an individual think, “I want to do business with that person”, or ” I like that person”. We all know you have only a few seconds to make an impression, so why would you display a branding image that was not “Artfully Mastered”?

Beauty Box 2.0

Digital Anarchy has announced Beauty Box Video 2.0, which is a video plug-in for smoothing and retouching skin in the major NLEs.  In addition to compatibility with After Effects 7.0–CS6, Final Cut Pro X, Final Cut Pro 7, and Premiere Pro CS4–CS6, version 2.0 adds support for Assimilate Scratch, Scratch Lab, Sony Vegas Por and Movie Studio.
Beauty Box Video 2.0 retails for $199, but is available for $149 through July 15, 2012.
More details in the press release below.
Beauty Box Video 2.0 Released for Easy Skin Retouching in Assimilate Scratch and Sony Vegas
OpenFX Version Now Available of Award-Winning Tool for Removing Wrinkles and Blemishes in HD and 4K Footage
June 21st, 2012 – San Francisco - Digital Anarchy today announced Beauty Box Video 2.0 for OpenFX, a new release that brings their award-winning skin retouching plug-in to ASSIMILATE SCRATCH®, SCRATCH Lab®, Sony Vegas Pro®, and Sony Movie Studio®. Beauty Box now uses OpenCL, a new technology that runs on ATI and Nvidia cards, to automatically reduce wrinkles and blemishes. Fast rendering allows it to fit into any workflow pipeline. Version 2.0 also introduces a new smoothing algorithm that improves automatic masking, and adds shine removal for hot spots on skin areas.
“Love this software and it’s very simple to use”, said Rudi Schwab, director and cinematographer of the high-profile ad campaigns for Nexxus ‘Endless Style’ and Aveda Cosmetics. “You simply drag the Beauty Box effect onto a clip in the timeline, open up the Effects tab in the Viewer Window, click on Analyze Frame, and adjust the smoothing slider to your liking. I was amazed at how well Beauty Box works on skin tones. It looks as good as sitting in a $1000 per hour Flame suite. That’s critical when you’re doing commercials for skin care products.”
Since 2008, Beauty Box Video has been a critical tool for dealing with skin and makeup problems that HD and 4K reveal, but were not apparent in SD. Beauty Box gives actors or models an incredible makeover in post-production, using state-of-the-art face detection and smoothing algorithms that preserve important details and the natural skin texture. Its version 2.0 algorithm has been redeveloped to take advantage of the new OpenCL technology, which speeds up Beauty Box regardless of host application, operating system, or make of video card.
“SCRATCH and SCRATCH Lab have well-earned reputations as the most flexible DI and Dailies software in the industry, supporting standard interfaces such as OpenFX, XML and HTML”, said Steve Bannerman, VP of Marketing at ASSIMILATE. “We’re delighted to see Beauty Box, another best in class technology, join the prestigious list of OFX plug-ins that support SCRATCH and Lab. Now, our artists have the creative advantage of an incredibly powerful skin retouching tool at their fingertips, without ever having to leave the SCRATCH environment.”
Here is a rundown of the great new features:
·    ASSIMILATE SCRATCH and Sony Vegas Support: With this release we support a wide range of users from high-end finishing and advanced dailies artists to professional videographers. Other OpenFX Applications will be officially supported soon.
·    Fast Rendering: A complete rewrite of the skin-smoothing algorithm means Beauty Box renders quickly on ATI and NVIDIA cards.
·    Used by Hollywood: This best of class software for skin and makeup problems is used by studios around the world for feature films, television and commercials.
·    Shine Removal: Get rid of hot spots caused by shiny skin and bright lights! This feature dramatically reduces the effect of poor lighting conditions.
·    Better Masking: The skintone recognition algorithm has been redesigned for a better automatic masking process.
·    Award Winning: VideoMaker magazine named Beauty Box the Plugin of the Year, and it received multiple best of NAB awards when it was released in 2010.
Pricing and Availability
Beauty Box Video 2.0 for OpenFX is regularly priced at $199 USD, but will be on sale for $149 USD until July 15th, 2012. For Sony Vegas Pro and Movie Studio users a very special deal with Sony allows us to offer it for only $99 for a limited time for those applications.
