It is such a great feeling to know that photos of you are in a magazine when there are so many beautiful models in the world to choose from. It’s just amazing! Of course, I like to get published as much as the next person, but I also value the friendships that come out of working with other people and the opportunities to try new things at different shoots.”

London Olympics 2012

Dotsie Bausch – from anorexic model to Olympic medalist
Can you believe that American Olympic cyclist and silver medalist Dotsie Bausch used to be a very thin runway model suffering from anorexia and battling drug addiction? At the age of 14, Dotsie won a modeling contest for Seventeen Magazine where she did a shoot in California and her career took off from there. But, as her modeling career blossomed she battled severe anorexia and began abusing drugs.
However, Dotsie overcame both and went on to win the silver medal at the Olympics. Her transformation and success is an inspiration to many, and Dotsie is more than just an athlete or a model, she is a role model.

In addition, USA Today reported today that Condoleezza Rice and business executive Darla Moore will be the first female members Augusta National Golf Club, “one of the most exclusive clubs in the world and the host of the Masters.” It has taken three quarters of a century for Augusta National to reach this point and we applaud their decision.

The name of her new children’s clothing line is Truly Scrumptious, and it will be officially launched in mid-September. Heidi says that she enjoys the creative process that fashion design enables her to experience.

Modeling is hard work, even when you’re not shooting
If you think that being a model starts and ends at a photoshoot, you are in for a surprise. This Herald Sun article discusses what model Jessica Gomes does long before her photoshoots. Jessica Gomes is an Australian Sports Illustrated model, who has successfully transitioned into mainstream fashion. She stated that she often feels the need to compare herself to other models, such as Miranda Kerr. Jessica always looks for ways to improve her already fantastic body. In addition to doing dance cardio classes and band adhesion classes, she also hired celebrity personal trainer Tracey Anderson to help her plan a fitness routine. Anyone who wants to be a model must understand that they must give their best on and off camera. Modeling is a very competitive industry, and it’s crucial to be on top of your game.

Sabina Kelly in 2013 Tattoo Energy Calendar

Model: Sabina Kelly; Photographer: Christian Saint

Model  Sabina Kelly is doing very well in the industry. She’s worked with Playboy, FHM, David LaChapelle and Bunny Yeager. Now, she can add the 2013 Tattoo Energy Calendar to her amazing list of credits. Christian Saint shot the calendar and did a fantastic job. Sabina looks absolutely gorgeous!

Short yet iconic life of Marilyn Monroe
It has been 50 years since Marilyn Monroe’s death, but according to this article by Fashiontv.com, she still inspires many industry professionals, including glamour models, actors and photographers. She is still an icon, with many current glamour models attempting to imitate her style and look. Marilyn was more than just a glamour supermodel; she was a sex symbol, a talented actress and a well-known fashionista. Hugh Hefner also credits Marilyn for Playboy’s success in the beginning. Could anyone ever believe that a girl who initially never dreamed of modeling would go on to become such an influential part of the industry’s history?

Mosh scores cover of Kustom Magazine

Model: Mosh; Photographer: Holly West

A big congratulations to Model Mosh, who just added yet another cover to her already extensive list of credits. Last week, she was featured in our Modeling news roundup for starring in Pink’s new music video, and this time, she is on the August 2012 cover of Kustom Magazine. “A special thank you to the Petersen Automotive Museum, Holly West who photographed everything beautifully and the owner of that gorgeous car,” noted Mosh. This girl rocks!

Get married at supermodel Kathy Ireland’s vacation home
And finally, have you ever wondered what life’s like for the supermodels? This Daily Mail article discusses what a couple could expect when they rent supermodel Kathy Ireland’s vacation home as their wedding venue. Although getting married there will not make you a supermodel, you can certainly feel like one when you walk down the aisle. That home is absolutely fantastic. Apparently, Kathy Ireland has a new business called, Kathy Ireland Weddings. This company organizes dream luxurious weddings for people who can afford to travel to exclusive locations. Not only is Kathy Ireland a former supermodel, but she is also a business genius. Kathy’s business ventures including everything from clothing to office furniture and even books fitness DVDs.  Mosh stars in Pink’s new music video

Model Mosh is on fire. She is no stranger to being published and scoring fantastic modeling gigs. This time, she landed a leading role in Pink’s latest music video for her new single “Blow Me (One Last Kiss).” Here is what Mosh had to say about her recent accomplishment, “It was a privilege working with Pink, she’s such a talented and respected artist.” We wish Mosh continued success in the industry! You can read more about Mosh in the Model  interview.

Karolina Kurkova to join Campbell and Rocha on “The Face”
The Vancouver Sun reported that Karolina Kurkova will be a mentor on “The Face,” a new TV show about modeling. The show will revolve around aspiring models competing for a grand prize at the end, while under the guidance of the aforementioned supermodels. Kurkova wants to help newer models navigate the industry, because she understands that modeling is not as easy as it looks. She has a background in gymnastics, which taught her the importance of having a great work ethic that can be applicable to just about any career. Kurkova stated that she, just like Rocha and Campbell, wants to share what she has learned with the next generation of models. Kurkova knows how to reach success, and she has a lot to offer to the aspiring models that will be on the show. We wish her all the best!

Alice Lopez featured in Her Life Magazine

Photographer: Christine Rose Photography; Model: Alice Lopez

Congratulations to Model Alice Lopez on her recent feature in Her Life Magazine. Alice is a very experienced, agency-represented model who has been in the industry for seven years. When we asked Alice how she felt about being published, she replied: “This is the second time I’ve been in this magazine and am very happy to have worked with the same great team again. The photographer, Christine, is a great friend of mine and I always have a great time working with her. Tearsheets are important for a model’s book so I’m always very thankful for getting published.” We also asked her for a few words of advice to models who would like to get published. Alice stated, “The best advice for models to get published are two things: First, work on building a good book, because that is your resume. Second, be very professional and polite, this is so important! I cannot stress this enough. If a photographer, stylist or agent likes you, they will give you top priority. Try to avoid burning bridges in the industry. It doesn’t matter what you look like, don’t be a Diva!”

Ana Braga continues to score features

Model: Ana K Braga

Model Ana Braga is not slowing down. Ana’s ad for Combatives Gear has come out in Tap Out Magazine. The Combatives Gear ad will also run in Ultimate MMA (October issue) and Muscles Port magazine. In addition to being featured in September’s issue of Southern Vixens Magazine, she will also have her own column in it. It is going to be about modeling tips, fitness and nutrition. Her first piece comes out in the August issue.

Dawn Obrien taking strides as a fitness model

Model: Dawn O’Brien

Congratulations to Model Dawn O’Brien for her continuous success as a fitness model. She has been on the cover of FemmeXposure Magazine twice, in addition to being featured as a fitness model on Shapefit.com and in Natural Muscle Magazine. Dawn has also been featured on numerous health and fitness sites. Her story is remarkable, because back in 2000, she was in a very dangerous car crash and almost died. After the accident, she had to have complex brain surgery. The doctors told her husband that there is a high chance that if she lives she will not remember anything. Miraculously, she survived, suffered no memory loss at all and is now thriving as a fitness model/writer. Here is what Dawn had to say about modeling, “Modeling is a very competitive industry and it’s important to realize thousands of girls want to become models. Don’t become discouraged and give up on your dream.”

Age: Is it really just a number?
Just ask 82-year-old model Jacquie ‘Tajah’ Murdock, who, according to this Daily Mail article, just recently scored her first major ad campaign. The creative director of Lanvin, a French fashion label, chose Murdock to rock the company’s fall advertising campaign, stating that he wanted real people to represent the brand this season. Jacquie has been trying to become a well-known model for a very long time without much success in the past. Only now is she actually generating buzz about her modeling career. Many times, girls are told that they are too old for fashion at 22, but it appears like the industry is making somewhat of a turnaround, although younger models still dominate it. Murdock is another exception to the rule. She credits her hard work, persistence and dedication as the reasons why she made it into the limelight. If you work hard enough, you too can get there!

Modeling news roundup

This week’s highlights: James Patrick on how to get published; Victoria’s Secret models’ thoughts on Photoshop; How to succeed as a plus model; and more…

James Patrick on how to get publishes
Fitness Magazine cover, July/August 2011
Photographer: James Patrick

Ever wonder if you have what it takes to be published? Model member and fitness, commercial and editorial photographer James Patrick shared some of his tips with us. “When it comes to what I look for in talents when considering them for a feature in a publication,” said Patrick, “I think it depends primarily on the publication and what they are looking for. From a photographer’s perspective in general, I am looking for talents that can live up to the brand of the publication. By that, I mean that each client I shoot for has a specific need, niche, look, etc. What works for one may not necessarily work for another. One suggestion I would have here is when a photographer is casting for a publication to pay close attention to the specifics of the casting. Illustrate what you can bring to the project that helps you stand out from the competition.” Read more of Patrick’s tips. We would like to congratulate James on his success, and we wish him all the best! You can also check out his website and Facebook page.

Victoria’s Secret models’ thoughts on Photoshop
Ever wondered what Victoria’s Secret models think of Photoshop? Victoria’s Secret models are beautiful and the average person would agree that they do not need any retouching. For example, The Huffington Post noted that model Erin Heatherton does not like how her freckles are oftentimes removed during post-production work.. Whenever Photoshop is used, care must be taken not to make huge errors, such as when Doutzen Kroes’ leg went missing in an editorial shoot for Vogue China. The overuse of Photoshop by some photographers is the reason why many clients are asking for untouched photos, since it is becoming increasingly difficult to figure out what a model actually looks like. How much Photoshop is too much?

How to succeed as a plus model
If you are already a working plus size model and are looking to take your career to the next level, some tips provided in this article will be helpful to you. To summarize, if you are not in a major city where the majority of signed plus models find work, you will have to provide potential clients with photos that are as good as or better than the ones that your competition has. Your photos must demonstrate your skills as a model in such a way that would make you stand out from the rest of the pack. Additionally, it is important to know how to properly highlight the client’s product. Understand that whether or not you get the job depends on knowing the right people, so take time to attend networking events, as well as work hard to connect with people in the industry.

Kimberly Alexis Howe gets noticed on Twitter

Kimberly Alexis Howe & Paulina Gretzky

Model’s Kimberly Alexis Howe recently appeared wearing a bikini in a twitter photo with Paulina Gretzky from the set of “Grown Ups 2.” Paulina Gretzky is famous, gorgeous and gets a lot of attention. When she first posted a twitter photo of herself with Kimberly, people were wondering who the stunner was standing next to her. It just happened to be our very own Kimberly. In addition to her attention-worthy photo with Paulina, she has extensive modeling experience with L’Oreal Paris, Smart Bargain, Air One Italian Airline, Winter Music Conference (Banners), Improper Bostonian, Spirit Boston Magazine, Grace Ormonde, Platinum Wedding Style Magazine, Stuff Magazine, North End Scene, Sedurre, Splash Magazine, , New Hampshire Bridal Magazine, Puma, Rue La La, Wedding Expos, Performer & Talent Magazine and more! Here is what she had to day about her modeling career: “Ever since my first experience in Paris at the age of 17, I have enjoyed trying to keep a high level of integrity and class while experiencing the different jobs of modeling. I look forward to exploring new horizons.” She is definitely going places and worth keeping our eye on!

Child models and stage mothers
We all know that little girls love to play dress-up, but only a select few have made a career out of it. According to The Telegraph, many child models are establishing lucrative careers before they can even walk. However, there are concerns that the parents of these child models are being exploitative, and that they’re pushing their children into modeling for personal or financial gains. Supermodel Cindy Crawford, however, told her 10-year-old daughter to put modeling on hold for the next seven years due to the harsh nature of the industry. Children should be able to enjoy life when they are young, because essentially modeling is a job, and parents should not force it on their kids.

Former model opens fashion camp
Following her successful career as a model, Heather Cole decided to teach aspiring young models the ins and outs of the modeling world by organizing various summer camps. One of her camps, Camp Fashion Design, focuses on exploring the many unique aspects of the fashion industry through intense workshops and team-building exercises. Over the course of four days, campers (ages 12-17) learn how to put their ideas on paper, as well as how to pitch their concepts, pick out fabrics and construct their pieces. The $999 course also offers campers the chance to work with representatives from top fashion schools, tour NYC’s Garment District and meet professional models like “America’s Next Top Model” contestant Ashley Howard.

Modeling news roundup

This week’s highlights: Ana Braga on the cover of Krown magazine; Jessi June’s 16-page Penthouse layout; Jenna Jameson on the cover of Nouveau Mag; and more…

Miranda Kerr changes agencies
Australian supermodel Miranda Kerr left Chic Management, and signed with IMG Models. Miranda’s rep from Chic, Danielle Ragenard, also jumped ship to join with the new Australia-based company, and she’s currently managing IMG’s modeling operations in Sydney. Miranda stated that she’s parting with Chic on good terms. Having Miranda on the board will be great for IMG’s new office, since she is one of Australia’s highest profile models.

Ana Braga scores cover of Krown Magazine

Photographer: Gary Miller Foto; Model: Ana K Braga

A big congratulations to Model’s Ana Braga on her recent cover of Krown Magazine. Ana is a beautiful model who has a lot going for her! Here is what she had to say about her journey thus far, “I have been a professional dancer for many years, have traveled abroad and have been very fortunate to have been able to perform with amazing artist such as Lil John, Pitbul and many others. I have modeled in Brazil; I’m from Rio de Janeiro, where I did print and runway. I did some modeling in LA but mostly performed as a professional dancer. I took a long break from modeling ‘till last October when I got to meet a photographer from Utah. I owe it to him for “discovering” me. Just recently as “re-joined” Model's, my first feature was landing a Cover of Krown magazine 2012, I couldn’t be any happier. Also, I believe that it is important to become a VIP member! The best $10 I always spend monthly.”

The Humble beginnings of Project Runway
Supermodel Heidi Klum, the creator and host of Project Runway, remembers a time when the show was struggling to get off the ground. She said that when they first started filming the show, they didn’t even have the funds for a wardrobe budget—Heidi borrowed most of the clothing for the show from friends. Even though Heidi Klum was already a successful model when she started the show, she struggled to find anyone who would work with her. Heidi firmly believes that she was lucky to have Tim Gunn, Michael Kors and Marie Clarie’s Nina Garcia on her team. When it comes to trying something new to move one’s career forward and expand your horizons, it is important to try new things.

Jessi June’s recent features and industry success tips

Photographer: TH Taylor; Model: Jessi June

Congratulations to Model's Jessi June who was featured in September 2012 issue of Penthouse with a 16-page layout (all friendly photos!) She is also the EasyRiders centerfold for August 2012. Both magazines are on newsstands now. Jessi is no stranger to being published. When asked about her thoughts on her career she stated, “I’m content so far. Honestly, I don’t feel like I’ve succeeded yet. I set my goals by looking at the best, and seeing what they’ve done, and working my way to be better. The best girls out there have done a ton, and I’ve got some catching up to do before I catch them. Once I’m there, then we’ll do the happy dance, followed by the Carlton!” She also offered some advice for aspiring models, “I get new models writing to me quite frequently actually, and since no one helped me when I first started (some actually quoted me rates for advice… seriously!), my advice for aspiring models has always been the same: work harder than everyone around you. You could be the most gorgeous girl in the world, but if you’re not putting in the work, you won’t make it! I promise you, I am nowhere near as hot as plenty of my fellow models, nor am I the greatest model… but I work my ass off. Don’t wait to “be discovered” or for your “big break.” Make them discover you, and give yourself the big break. Hot looks get you glanced at… Your work ethic and professionalism gets you the double take, and the double take is what sets you apart.”

Be a better model
Georgia May Jagger knows how to model, since her mother, Jerry Hall, was also successful in the industry. However, the 20-year-old also knows that she has a lot to learn, and she’s constantly looking to improve and expand her modeling skill set. Georgia also stated that with continual practice, she’s beginning to feel a little more comfortable in front of the camera. She noted that even the most successful models sometimes get intimidated at shoots, which is why she often takes the time to ask questions about the industry with experienced models, like her mother. Being a better model means actually taking the time to learn, get feedback, take chances and not be afraid of critique.

Lauren Calaway’s new magazine is going strong!

And finally, model Lauren Scruggs, who lost an arm and an eye to an airplane’s propeller last winter, is feeling strong about her recovery. The article, which shows a picture of the model with her new prosthetic arm, goes on to explain how Lauren, a devout Christian, utilized her faith to guide her during difficult times. Lauren even learned to drive a stick shift car. Her positive outlook on life is definitely something that we can all learn from.

Modeling news roundup

This week’s highlights: Elle Macpherson out as Fashion Star host; Jessa Hinton, Leticia Farr and Shana add to their list of credits; and more…
Elle Macpherson out as Fashion Star host
Australian supermodel Elle Macpherson will not be returning to host “Fashion Star.” She will no longer be on the show, but she will remain as executive producer. Elle has done a great job as a model and host, and we’re sure that she will continue to exhibit her excellence as an executive producer. H&M is also moving on from the show after deciding that sponsoring it is no longer a good fit for their business. Elle stated that she has been “involved with ‘Fashion Star’ from the beginning and [I] am very proud to see it come to life, not only in America, but globally.”
 Jessa Hinton in Ultimate  Magazine

Model: Jessa Hinton; Photographer: Dave Alan
Model  Jessa Hinton is no stranger to being published since she was the Playboy Playmate July 2011. This time, she will be featured in Ultimate  Magazine. Congratulations to Jessa for her outstanding achievements!
Latinas advancing in plus size modeling industry
The Huffington Post has an interesting blog about Full Figured Fashion Week and the emergence of Latinas in the plus size modeling industry. It’s an excellent piece by Monique Frausto that lists some of the models making a name for themselves, like Fluvia Lacerda, Madeline Figueroa Jones and Denise Bidot.
Monique also discusses the struggle young women face accepting their body and how these models can be an inspiration to them, and she closes by saying, “For me these women are more than plus size models; they’re a representation of today’s hard working, accomplished, perseverant and proud Latina.”
Leticia Farr spokesmodel for 5 Round Fury

Model: Leticia Farr; Photographer: Dave Alan
Congratulations to Model  Leticia Farr on being chosen to be the spokesmodel for 5 Round Fury nutritional supplements. Leticia will be appearing at many UFC events. In addition to having been published in Ultimate  Magazine, she was also chosen by Ultimate  magazine to interview UFC and  fighters and she will have her own section in Ultimate  magazine. The girl is rocking the industry, and she is only at the start of her career!
Shana in The Ring magazine

Model: Shana; Photographer: Dave Alan
Congratulations also to Model Shana on being in the current issue of America’s premier boxing magazine, THE RING. She is a beautiful model, and we look forward to seeing more stunning shots of her in magazines!
Model turned actor – Sandra Linz
And finally, examiner.com reports that German model Sandra Linz broke into the industry at a young age. After achieving success as a model, actress and singer in Germany and Japan, she relocated to Los Angeles and studied at the famous Stella Adler Academy of Acting.
Since moving to LA, Sandra’s list of credits for movies, TV commercial and modeling has grown rapidly. No doubt her looks and acting ability played a huge part, but in addition “Sandra speaks fluent Japanese, German and some French and Korean and is also able to perfect other accents including British and Russian.” As if that isn’t enough, she also lists martial arts, dancing, combat and voiceover work as some of her additional skills.

Modeling news roundup

This week’s highlights: America’s Next Top Model boosts social strategy; Magda Kulpinska in Italian Vogue; Breaking into the modeling industry; and more!

America’s Next Top Model boosts social strategy

New social media engagement strategies are popping up everywhere: TV shows, companies, business people, and public figures are coming up with ways to implement greater fan involvement via social media. America’s Next Top Model is one of the latest TV shows to implement a fan-voting component to their decision making. The producers have figured out that when they post something on the show’s Facebook timeline, the post gets about 500 likes and 75 comments. However, when they post something that requires a vote there is a dramatic increase in likes and comments, with the average being 600+ likes and 800 text comments.

Magda Kulpinska in Italian Vogue
Model: Magda Kulpinska; Photographer: Dag Knudsen

Congratulations to Model Magda Kulpinska on her recent feature in Italian Vogue. The photo was shot by Dag Knudsen. She is a beautiful model with a lot of experience under her belt. We look forward to seeing more of Magda and wish her continued success!

Gisele Bundchen rejected by 42 modeling agents!
Did you know that 42 modeling agents rejected Gisele Bundchen before she was eventually signed? Even though Gisele has graced the covers of countless magazines and walked hundreds of fashion shows, her road to fame and fortune was not easy. Despite not being signed until she met with the 43rd modeling agent, she is currently on track to be the world’s first billionaire supermodel.
Gisele is living proof that persistence pays off, and we bet that the 43rd agent was glad to have taken her on. Gisele is currently looking to find models in remote areas of her home country by promoting a contest titled Top CUFA (Central Unica das Favelas, or Central Union of Slums), which will focus on finding model talent from Brazil’s most underprivileged areas.

Breaking into the modeling business
Before attempting to break into the modeling business, it is important to understand all the different types of modeling. Different types of modeling require different looks. Modeling is a very tough business to break into and not everyone is cut out for it, especially considering the emotional and the physical requirements that it takes to do this professionally. Depending on the market and the type of modeling, print models can be any size, but runway models have to be around 5’10″ and between sizes 0 to 4. To be a model, you have to be able to take rejection and criticism without losing confidence in yourself and your abilities. You also do not have to follow a strict diet and exercise obsessively in order to be a model, as long as you choose your niche correctly. Modeling does not have to be a pressure-filled job, since stressing over comments, rejection, and where your next gig will come from will not advance your career; however, working hard, looking your best, acting like a professional, and accepting that you cannot please everyone will definitely help you achieve your goals.

Modeling news roundup

This week’s highlights: Donna Feldman nominated to the Most Beautiful List;  Amelia Nightmare scores cover of Tattoo Life; How to get into the modeling industry; Jade Vixen lands cover of Bed Sheets Magazine; and more!

Donna Feldman nominated to The Most Beautiful List
Israeli Supermodel Donna Feldman has been nominated to the most beautiful list, which names the 100 most beautiful women in the world. It’s no surprise that she is nominated to the list given the fact that she has been the face of several multi-million dollar ad campaigns. Donna has modeled for Christian Audigier Swimwear, Fila, Jaguar, Lucky Brand, Nautica, Bacardi and Revlon. An ad for Visa Black Card with Donna Feldman has been featured in almost every luxury magazine over the past two years. Donna has an extensive list of publications under her belt, including Esquire, GQ, Maxim and FHM.

Amelia Nightmare scores cover of Tattoo Life

Model: Amelia Nightmare; Photographer: Christian Saint
Photo editing website. Congratulations to Model Amelia Nightmare on her recent cover of Tattoo Life. Not only is she a fantastic model, but she is also a make-up artist and hair stylist. The image on the cover was shot by Christian Saint.  Amelia has had quite a few covers and we are definitely on the lookout for other great work from her down the road. We wish her all the best!

How to get into the modeling industry
Are you an aspiring model who would like to break into the modeling industry? If yes, then you may want to check out UKMA, a directory for modeling agencies in the UK which also offers modeling advice to new models. Although it is not necessary to spend hundreds of dollars on photoshoots, it is always better to pay a professional photographer to take some photos for your portfolio. Sometimes agencies and potential clients need to see what you are capable of as a model before they take you on, since the whole idea is for the agency to make money. However, it is very important not to fall victim to scams and portfolio mills, so it is crucial to do your research before spending your time and money.

Jade Vixen lands cover of Bed Sheets Magazine

Model: Jade Vixen; Photographer: Jerry Bennett; Clothing Designer: Westward Bound
Congratulations to Model Jade Vixen on her recent cover of Bed Sheets Magazine issue # 43. Bed Sheets Magazine is a lifestyle magazine based in Bangkok, Thailand, and this issue featured several talented British designers. The image credits are as follows:  Photo: Jerry Bennett, Styling/MUA/Hair: Jade Vixen, Latex: Westward Bound, Editing: Jade Vixen & Jerry Bennett. Jade is a beautiful and model with extensive experience having worked with a variety of photographers, designers and publications. We wish her continued success in the industry!

Aussie models make world’s top 50
Beautiful blonde Australian Julia Nobis is the latest addition to the list of the world’s top 50 models. Since she was discovered by an agent two years ago her career has skyrocketed and she has become one of the top-earning catwalk stars.  Getting discovered, however, has become very rare because there are thousands of girls knocking on agents’ doors trying to actively get signed. Right now more than ever, models have to work very hard and have the right attitude in addition to the right look to get signed. Julia Nobis is the fourth Australian model on the list. Also making the top 50 are Abbey Lee Kershaw at number 5, Miranda Kerr at number 10, and Ajak Deng at number 47.

Kaela Humphries: I feel “really blessed” to be modeling
Kaela Humphries is one of the very few people for whom success came quickly in this industry. It was not too long ago that she left her job of six years as a medical sales rep to take a leap of faith and accept a contract with Ford Models in their plus division. The best part of her story is that she understands that modeling is a privilege and not a right, and she’s willing to work for it. Kaela does not act like she is entitled to success in the industry, which is a great attitude to have. She stated that she feels really blessed to be doing this and that she understands that success like hers does not happen for most people that quickly.

Modeling news roundup

This week’s highlights: Bar Rafaeli tops Maxim’s Hot 100 list;  Radeo scores cover of Bizarre magazine; Leah Jung Scores cover of Tattoo1.Tribal;  Lauren Calaway launches own magazine; and more!
Bar Rafaeli tops Maxim Hot 100 list
Israeli model Bar Rafaeli is ranked #1 on the Maxim Hot 100 list. Rafaeli is a popular face in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue, and she is also known for dating Leonardo DiCaprio in the past. The article stated that although this ranking came as a bit of a surprise, Maxim readers like beautiful girls who are not afraid to have fun and who are approachable, and Bar Rafaeli fits that criteria. According to the article, she is very easy to talk to, people find they can relate to her and they believe she would be cool to hang out with. Did you ever think that perceived personality factors affect someone’s rank in Maxim’s Hot 100?
Radeo scores cover of Bizarre magazine

Model: Radeo; Photographer: Christian Saint
Radeo is yet another  model who has landed the cover of a magazine. We would like to extend our congratulations to her for her achievement. Radeo is on the cover of Bizarre magazine’s June issue, and she was shot by Christian Saint. Radeo said, “shooting with Christian Saint for Bizarre was a blast. I don’t really shoot unless it’s something I know will be fun but I don’t think I’ve had that much fun on a shoot in a long time.”
We wish Radeo continued success and we look forward to seeing more great magazine features and covers from her.
Leah Jung scores cover of Tattoo1.Tribal

Model: Leah Jung; Photographer: Lady Lux Productions; Makeup Artist: makeup Cecret
A huge congratulations to Model  Leah Jung on her recent cover of Tattoo1.Tribal magazine’s May/June issue. She was shot by Lady Lux Productions. Here is what she had to say about her recent achievement: “Model  is what helped get my career started and I always recommend it to other aspiring models. My first magazine cover (15 and counting now!) was the Village Voice, America’s largest weekly newspaper, and they found me on Model. I am also writing two separate monthly columns. One in Tattoo’d Lifestyle Magazine, called ‘Leah Jung, Tattoo Jung-kie,’ and another for a Norwegian magazine InkStyle, called ‘Life of Leah,’ which they translate into Dutch! I have been flown to two different countries (Copenhagen, Denmark and Vancouver, BC) and to several states for photo shoots. I have even been published in some magazines that rarely depict tattooed people. Model  gave me the tools to shine in the tattoo modeling world for the last two years. Thank you!”
 Lauren Calaway launches own magazine

Model: Lauren Calaway
Lauren Calaway is no stranger to modeling. She is stunning, has been widely published, is represented by multiple agencies, and has shot with hundreds of photographers. Lauren is now taking on yet another venture in the industry–her own magazine, Nouveau Magazine, which features a lot of  talent. Here is what she had to say about modeling: “Modeling is about believing in yourself. Every single day you face rejection; someone will tell you how you are not tall enough or pretty enough. It is how you face those rejections and keep fighting for your dream that make you a good model. I feel as if it was a long hard road for me, but I kept fighting. I kept trying to prove those people wrong, which is why I have a career now. And I continue to fight, even at this stage. You have to fight for your dreams.” We wish Lauren continued success, and we know she will continue to inspire us with her great photos and achievements in the industry.
Teen wins trip to Paris for modeling opportunity
And finally, Rachel Radzak will not be attending her high school graduation ceremony, because instead she will be traveling to Paris for a modeling showcase where she’ll get the chance to show off her talents for several large agencies. Rachel won this trip because she won a DiscoverMe contest, which she deemed as being low key. She got the most votes through texting, although she did not expect anything out of the contest when she entered. Although Rachel is new, she really understands the business. She understands how competitive and scary the industry can be if you’re a novice, as well as how much personal criticism one receives from strangers. She also understands the importance of signing with a legitimate agency and taking on legitimate work. Radzak is highly involved with school activities, so she really understands that modeling is something she could do, but that she should not count on it as the ticket to a life of luxury. She points out that the key for her is to try everything,  to shoot high and go for your dreams, but don’t expect for things to be handed to you.

Jenna Talackova makes top 12 in Miss Universe Canada
Model  Jenna Talackova made history by being the first ever transgender contestant to compete in the Miss Universe Canada pageant. Although she did not win first place, she made it to the top 12, which is a remarkable accomplishment. Jenna was also one of the four contestants named Miss Congeniality. Jenna won the right to compete in the contest after drawing international attention to her disqualification. While Jenna may be disappointed at not winning first place, she won the battle for civil rights by being allowed to compete and forever changed the competition. Kudos to Jenna!
Alloy Ash scores Bound by Ink cover
Alloy Ash Bound by Ink magazine cover
Model: Alloy Ash; Photographer: Andy Hartmark; Hair Stylist: Salon Blu
Congratulations to Model  Alloy Ash for scoring the cover of Bound by Ink. Alloy Ash is a state champion TIG welder and successful alt model. She’s scored multiple magazine features and covers, including a 10-pages and the cover of Bizarre Magazine, and National Geographic filmed Speedcult, the welding shop she works at in Detroit. Alloy Ash said, “It’s a little complicated being a welder at Speedcult and a model as I’m not the type of girl that’s worried about getting bruised while I’m welding. I’m the queen of the flame throwers there too – they shoot two stories!” She’s also very humble about her success and feels incredibly lucky to have worked with some of her favorite photographers, including Christian Saint, Andy Hartmark, and Lithium Picnic, as well as being sketched by Michael Hussar! Alloy Ash is certainly going places and with more covers coming out soon looks set to be a regular in this column.
Kat Lehto in Leslie Deep’s music video

Model: Kat Lehto; Photographer: Lisa Wilkerson-Willis
Congratulations to Model  Kat Lehto on recently being part of Leslie Deep’s “Don’t Need Nobody” music video. Here is what she had to say about her experience: “It was a lot of fun working on the music video. I had worked Leslie Deep before on two other music videos (Ho No Mo and Drive Thru). Everyone was always happy and smiling in the video, and constant energy was needed. The hardest part was working outside in the middle of the day because it was so hot. The experience was rewarding and the music video came out great.”
Thin models don’t inspire most women to shop
The fashion industry has always had a popular belief that using very thin, young and beautiful models will make the average female consumer want to buy the clothes because the women all want to relate to youth, beauty, and slenderness. However, a recent study has shown otherwise. During the study, women were shown ads which had models that had some of their traits, all of their traits, or none of their traits. The results showed that the more traits the models had that were the same or similar to the women being shown the ads, the more likely the female consumers were to respond positively to the ad and purchase something. Did you know that women want to see clothing modeled by someone who is close to them in body shape, size, age, and race? Do you know why that is? First, it is because the average consumers can relate better to the person being in the ads and second, they like to see how the clothing looks on someone like themselves.
Hollywood’s latest trend: Models turned actors
And finally, did you start modeling so that you could eventually get into acting? If so, you may have a chance because the more modeling success you achieve, the greater the chances that the right person will see you. Both acting and modeling are very competitive, especially in Hollywood, where almost everyone believes they are a model or an actor. It is very common in Hollywood to become a model before becoming an actor. Sometimes, people have to accept modeling gigs before they can make enough connections to get into acting. Most good models are also very good at projecting emotion, which is required for people to become actors. Some of the top examples of models turned actors are: Brooklyn Decker, Milla Jovovich, Charlize Theron, Ashton Kutcher, Tyrese Gibson, and Kim Basinger.

Modeling news roundup

Modeling news roundup

This Week’s Highlights: Modeling as an art form; Melanie Lacy scores the cover of Retro Lovely;  Ksenia on the cover of FHM South Africa;  Veronica LaVery scores another cover; and more!

Ksenia on the cover of FHM South Africa

Model: Ksenia D; Photographer: Gavin O

Being published in any edition of FHM is a big deal for a model, since it is a very well-known magazine. Being on the cover of FHM is even more amazing. We would like to say our sincere congratulations to Model Ksenia D for her recent cover of FHM South Africa. Here is what she had to say about her recent accomplishment: “This is my first cover, so it was very exciting, and hopefully my first of many.” We definitely look forward to seeing more covers from Ksenia. She is a stunning model and we wish her all the best!

Modeling as an art form

A senior student at Fargo Davies High School, Audra Mari, looks at modeling as an art form. Most recently, she was on the cover of Mpls. St. Paul Magazine’s 40th anniversary issue where she was wearing a dress made of magazine pages. The photo took a large amount of effort to produce because she had to be sewn into the dress. The young lady believes that modeling is an art and that it takes more than just being beautiful to be a good model. However, this is not Audra’s first experience as a model, as she has been modeling for 3 years. She has even done runways shows and a Halloween ad for Target, as well as modeled dresses for Sherri Hill. Before taking up modeling, Audra was an active athlete, which has helped her develop the necessary discipline to do well in the modeling industry. She believes that it is important to keep in great shape and to fit the sizes, although she is keen on doing it the healthy way. In addition to modeling, Audra has taken part in pageants and is Miss North Dakota Teen USA 2011. Currently, she is working with Paul Fisher of The Network to see if any big name designers and agencies are interested in her. Audra believes in pursuing her dreams and is making sure that she is in the company of people who support her. Although she was bullied in high school, she is doing what she can to not let the negative people get the best of her. It is very important to be surrounded with positive people when trying to accomplish goals.

Melanie Lacy scores the cover of Retro Lovely Magazine

Model: Melanie Lacy; Photographer: Holly West; Makeup Artist: Rebecca Schillinger

Congratulations to google Melanie Lacy on her recent cover of Retro Lovely magazine. She is a fantastic model and we definitely look forward to hearing more about her success in the future.
Here is what she had to say about her recent accomplishment: “Photographer Pat Coddington and I met on Model. He contacted me about a concept that he wanted to shoot at the old immigration building in Seattle. The shoot went well and we got along like gangbusters! He quickly sent me the shots and I was blown away. A week later he told me he’d submitted one for your corkboard, and that y’all liked the image so much you wanted to make it a full page in issue 5. He texted me and I immediately cried! A full page from a corkboard submission, it’s unheard of! I had commented on the post you’d made about our submission and y’all must have seen my profile photo from the set. Y’all got in contact with Pat and came up with a two page spread from the set! He later texted and said, ‘Well, Michael changed his mind and doesn’t want it as a full page anymore.’ Devastated, I tried to muster up something gracious to say. He then texted back, ‘Yeah, he wants two!’ Classic Pat… such a stinker. It was a real Cinderella story. I’m forever in debt to Pat for submitting, because had he not everything would be different for me.”
Retro Lovely is offering 20 percent off the cover price for readers.

Sexual harassment and discrimination in the modeling industry

Did you know that nearly 30 percent of models report that they have been sexually harassed on the job? This statistic comes from a survey conducted by the Model Alliance, which is fighting for employment rights for models and is very similar in function to a union. Does this mean that modeling is an unfavorable profession? Absolutely not. In fact, jobs in non-modeling industries probably have several instances of sexual harassment and violations of rights, but the modeling industry is the one that gets picked on the most. The biggest lesson here is that due diligence is important, and that one should never be afraid to speak up if they have been harassed in any way. When you speak out about harassment, you have nothing to lose, but the party at fault has a lot to lose.

Veronica LaVery scores another cover

Model: Veronica LaVery; Photographer: W B Fontenot
It is obvious that Model  Veronica LaVery is on fire, since this is the fourth appearance in our Modeling News Roundup. Recently, the Eastern European beauty has been featured on the cover of Alwayz Therro, photographed by Barry Fontenot. A look at Veronica’s Model profile shows her career is taking off. The girl is going places and we look forward to seeing more and more of her success.

What the US can learn from Israel’s ban of skinny models

A couple of months ago, Israel passed a law that banned models that are too skinny from advertising campaigns, using BMI as the standard to determine if the models are underweight or not. Photoshop usage would also be regulated in advertising and mass media. The industry has been criticized for a very long time for both the use of models that are too skinny and the use of Photoshop to make them look even skinnier. BMI is not a perfect way of determining health since there is a big difference between health and weight. According to a 1999 study published in Pediatrics, about two thirds of American girls in the fifth to 12th grades say that magazine pictures influence their image of an ideal body; about half of girls in those grades said the magazine images made them want to lose weight. However, the US government is less regulatory than Israel, although it is encouraged to put public pressure on the fashion industry and push towards a healthier approach to modeling.

Modeling news roundup

This week’s highlights: Vogue bans models that are too young and too thin; Veronica LaVery in Maxim en Espanol;  Eva Fydrych talks modeling and Fashion Studio Magazine; and more!
Vogue bans models that are too young and too thin
Vogue and other fashion magazines have been criticized for images of models that are too thin and too young, claiming that such images create self-esteem and body image issues among the young girls who read them. On May 3, 2012, Vogue magazine said that it will stop using models that are too young and too thin. Vogue says that the magazine will no longer be working with models who are under the age of 16 or who look like they have an eating disorder. Vogue is taking a huge step towards breaking the mold of the fashion model, many of whom are 16 with a BMI of below 18. Do you believe they will follow through with their word? Is this a step towards healthier fashion modeling?
Veronica LaVery in Maxim en Espanol

Model: Veronica LaVery; Photographer: Martin Alonso
Congratulations to Veronica LaVery on yet another feature. This time it is 10 pages in Maxim en Espanol, which is an amazing achievement. Veronica is frequently mentioned in our Modeling News Roundups because she has been getting feature after feature in a variety of publications. She is beautiful, talented, and is on fire. We are excited to see what she will do next!
Linda Evangelista demands $45,000/month in child support
Canadian model Linda Evangelista is claiming that she needs $45,000 a month to take care of her 5-year old son. She is suing one of France’s wealthiest men, fashion billionaire Francois-Henry Pinault, for child support. Pinault is the CEO of PPR, which owns Gucci, Yves St Laurent and Alexander McQueen. Linda Evangelista reached supermodel status when she was younger but admits that she is not getting as many modeling gigs now that she is in her late 40s, which is part of the reason she is asking for so much money. Evangelista wants the $45,000 a month so that she can pay for 24-hour nannies, private schools, and armed guards for her son. Pinault’s lawyer claimed the $45,000 a month figure was “ridiculous”. And, they may have a point considering that’s close to the average annual family income.
Eva Fydrych talks modeling and Fashion Studio Magazine

Model: Eva F; Photographer: Mark Pascasio; Makeup Artist: Lynda Low
After a couple of years of modeling in Europe, Canada and Asia, Model Mayhem’s Eva Fydrych startedFashion Studio Magazine, an online magazine to showcase young and up-and-coming models, photographers, fashion designers and other aspects of the industry.
We talked to Eva about her experience as a model and she also had a few words of advice to aspiring models: “Modelling industry is extremely competitive and to be successful you need to have a lot of determination and persistence. If you are just starting out, it is important to do a lot of research and ask more experienced people for advice. Some modelling agencies publish useful tips on their websites. They can explain how the business operates, what kind of pictures are required and what are the general requirements to get signed with their agency. It can save you a lot of time, money, and mistakes along the way.
Be realistic about your abilities and don’t try to achieve something that is not possible. If you are not tall enough, you can’t become a professional catwalk model.
Contrary to a popular belief, it takes much more than just a pretty face and a slim figure to make it as a model. The right attitude, personality and work ethic go a long way. If you are reliable, polite and easy to work with, you will probably get more bookings that someone who is demanding and difficult to handle. Make sure you are always on time and arrive prepared for the shoot. Every assignment is different so it is crucial to be flexible and pay attention to what is required from you as a model.
Anja Rubik, one of the top fashion models, said in one of her interviews that ‘modelling is a combination of natural talent, the ability to adapt to different situations, hard work, and most importantly, luck.’ I think it’s a really good definition that sums it all up”. Here is what she had to say about the opportunities that she has had as a model: “I am really grateful for all the opportunities that I had. Modelling has been not only a great job, but most of all an adventure, a challenge, and an opportunity to meet a lot of talented people and visit some exciting destinations. It is a really rewarding career if you learn how to handle its negative aspects (rejection, competition, jealousy, irregular income, people trying to take advantage of you) and concentrate on the positive sides. If you have strong will power and know what you want to achieve, modelling definitely offers many interesting opportunities and glamorous lifestyle.
My experience as a model helps me in many ways in my everyday life. I am more aware of my posture, body language and general impression I make on people. I learned how to quickly adapt to new situations, be more confident and collaborate with different types of people. I can handle rejection without taking it personally and I also know that if you really want something and work hard for it, you can finally get it”.
